When most people see or hear guns being shot, it’s usually in a television crime show or a big-screen thriller. However, if you’ve ever gone hunting or practiced shooting at a gun range, you know that it isn’t quite like how the actors portray it. If you don’t give your firearm the respect it deserves, you could do major damage to your hearing and even to your vision. Here are 3 reasons why you should always wear hearing and eye protection while shooting a firearm:
1. The main reason you should wear hearing protection while shooting a firearm is because gunshots are extremely loud. Just one gunshot up close has the potential to cause long-term or even permanent damage to your hearing. Make it a habit, and you could develop tinnitus, a constant ringing noise in your ears. Using ear plugs, headphones, or even both will drastically reduce potential damage from the shockwaves. Look for a minimum Noise Reduction Rating of 22 in the protection method(s) you select.
2. Eye protection (sometimes called eye-pro or “eyes”) can be just as important as hearing protection. When handling, cleaning, or shooting a firearm, you never know what kind of dust and debris may get kicked up, and when the firearm ejects a hot metal casing, you don't want that hitting your eye. Wearing special eye protection rated for high velocity impacts is crucial when you’re shooting, and will offer both safety and peace of mind.
3. Another reason to wear the proper eye and ear protection is to show respect to your fellow shooters. Walking around without proper protection can cause other shooters to be especially wary or anxious, given the importance of safety in the gun world, and can ruin the experience for your fellow shooting enthusiasts.
