NIU men's basketball season to start Nov. 25 against UIC

NIU on Thursday announced its non-conference schedule, consisting of three home games ahead of its previously announced conference slate.

The Huskies will open the season Nov. 25 against UIC, then a week later host SIU-Edwardsville.

The non-conference slate concludes Dec. 18 against Chicago State.

“I’m excited about our non-conference, home schedule and getting the opportunity to play three in-state schools from three different leagues,” said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery. “It is good to get UIC, from the Horizon League, back on the schedule and continue that rivalry with an opponent just down the road."

NIU’s regular-season opener will be its first meeting against UIC since the 2017-18 season when the Huskies topped the Flames, 69-63, in DeKalb (Dec. 21, 2017). NIU is currently on a three-game win streak against UIC. Last season, the Huskies earned road wins over both SIU Edwardsville and Chicago State.

The MAC slate begins Dec. 29 when NIU hosts Ball State.

“Playing SIUE, an Ohio Valley (Conference) team, is another good in-state game and it seems like every time we play them it goes down to the wire. Chicago State brings another conference, the WAC, and another local, Chicago opponent. We want to continue all of our in-state rivalries, so to get three during this pandemic is huge because scheduling has been very tricky, but it is going to be great to get back to playing some basketball.”

For just $60, fans can put their image on a cutout that will remain in place in the NIU Convocation Center for all NIU men’s and women’s basketball games during the 2020-21 season. Net proceeds from all fan cutouts will benefit the Huskie Athletic Fund, which is currently in the midst of Huskies Invest: The Campaign, supporting student-athletes and NIU Athletics' COVID-19 relief efforts.
