NIU punter Matt Ference was named a semifinalist for the 2020 Campbell Trophy, annually given to the nation's top football scholar-athlete.
Ference has an opportunity to receive an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship, which is awarded to each of the 12-to-14 finalists for the Campbell Trophy. The winner of the trophy also receives a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship and an appearance (virtual this year) at the College Football Awards Show on ESPN.
Past winners include Peyton Manning (Tennessee), Chad Pennington (Marshall), Tim Tebow (Florida), Sam Acho (Texas), and last year’s recipient Justin Herbert from Oregon.
Ference is the program's all-time leading punter, averaging 41.4 yards per punt. He was also an academic all-MAC selection.
