Family who lost home in devastating St. Albans Green fire reflects on life one year later
One year after her family lost the place they'd called home for a decade after a fiery blaze destroyed Building A of the St. Albans Green apartment complex in Sycamore, Carie Martin said she still suffers from ongoing trauma and sometimes can't be around smoke.
"I still have traumatic instances," Martin said Monday, the one year anniversary of the fire which ravaged her apartment complex, displacing 120 and robbing her of all of her possessions.
"I actually still go to counseling because I still have these, I don't know if you'd call it PTSD, but I still freak out over smoke," she said. "Like out of nowhere it'll trigger me. Sometimes I still get scared when I see smoke or fire trucks. It always brings me back to that day. I think it'll always be in the back of my mind that something traumatic happened to everybody."
