To the Editor:
Good day, President Lisa Freeman, Board of Trustees of Northern Illinois University, Governor Pritzker, House Leader Michael Madigan, all legislators of Illinois, all parents, student, and future students of Illinois surrounding the state of Illinois.
I, Jim Mason, resident of Illinois at this time, am requesting to know if NIU will open this fall with students in classroom attendance at its regular scheduled time in DeKalb, Illinois. In my dealings with my clientele and the public, the most asked question is, will NIU open. Not knowing is an abdication of the public trust.
It is of utmost urgency for all Illinois residents, parents and students to know whether NIU and all other state schools will open on time in the fall of 2020 so people can enroll and make transportation and housing plans. I understand Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa and Wisconsin are all opening with no equivocation. Northern Illinois University does not have 30 to 60 days to make this decision.
COVID-19 is going to be around for a long time. Playing games with COVID-19 does not serve the citizens of Illinois. With 85% of the people testing positive having no symptoms and less than 1% dying, it is imperative that the state assets are not mothballed for any reason.
It is understood that all state schools are the property of the taxpayers of Illinois, and I am asking equitable use of said properties and notification forthwith for this request. This petitioner’s request should be answered by the appropriate authorities within or less than a fortnight to accommodate all interested parties.
James C. Mason
