Johnson: Genoa King and Queen contest to go on

Royalty is returning to Genoa for the 61st anniversary of the Genoa Days’ King and Queen Scholarship Contest. Although Genoa Days is not taking place this year, the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce will still host the King and Queen Scholarship competition.

The Chamber and member businesses recognize the importance of education as well as the increasing costs that come with it. The King and Queen Scholarship Contest is an opportunity to acknowledge our community youth and provide them with financial assistance to reach their future goals.

All graduating seniors in the Genoa-Kingston School District boundaries were eligible to apply for the scholarship that is provided by Chamber businesses and organizations. Those applications were reviewed by a committee and the top five boys and top five girls were selected to be on the King and Queen “court”.

The finalists were contacted by phone and the contest committee announced the 20 finalists via social media May 11. This year’s King candidates are William Franson, Tyler Leahy, Angel Navarrete, Evan Scarzynski and Lucas Sus. This year’s Queen candidates are Kaedyn Neblock, Joely Overstreet, Alison Rahn, Jewel Sanders and Olivia Simmons. Congratulations to the 2020 Royal finalists!

The contestants will be interviewed privately before the final part of the competition, which will be done a little bit differently this year.

Instead of the finalists answering a question on stage, the finale will take place at an undisclosed location with only the judges, the contestants and two family members. Keeping with the social distance mandate and state guidelines, the public will not be able to be present at the ceremony. Have no fear, family and friends still will be able to watch the event through a livestream on the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

Thank you to our 2020 judges: Mark Carlson with State Farm Insurance, Tricia Herrera of Ralfie’s BBQ, Linda Peterson with Resource Bank, Genoa Police Chief Robert Smith, Hannah Davekos with First Midwest Bank and Genoa Mayor Mark Vicary. After judging is completed, the 2020 Genoa King and Queen will be crowned to reign over Genoa and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. We look forward to their future! The best of luck to all of our candidates!

Be sure to watch the competition at 7:30 p.m. June 10 online at www.facebook.com/exploregenoa/.

We hope to see everyone out exploring Genoa in our near future! In the meantime, wash your hands, wear your mask and stay safe.
