SYCAMORE – While the Illinois Department of Public Health recommends that schools hold classes, Sycamore School District 427 is taking steps to prevent possible spread at extra-curricular events.

Sycamore School District 427 sent a letter out to parents Thursday morning stating that the district has postponed or canceled district and school-sponsored events involving large gatherings with parents and community members outside of the regular school day, until further notice.

“This includes postponing this weekend’s Sycamore High School’s Orchesis production of “Dancing Inside Out,” the letter states. The district will have more information regarding the event at a later date.

However, the Illinois Department of Public Health “continues to recommend that schools hold classes.”

“Please know this does not impact our regularly scheduled school day,” according to the letter.

Sycamore School District Superintendent Kathy Countryman said in the email that the decision may bring more questions, but that it follows the lead of state organizations, including the Illinois High School Association, regarding state competitions involving students.

“Please continue to monitor the school district’s website and our email communications as we work to provide more details about this as quickly and as responsibly as possible,” the letter states.

The district also continues to actively monitor reports of COVID-19, or coronavirus, and follow guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the DeKalb County Health Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the DeKalb County Regional Office of Education.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding,” the letter states. “All decisions are being made with the safety and well-being of our students in mind, and we are being as responsive as we can with the most reliable information we are receiving.”

The Daily Chronicle made multiple attempts to reach Countryman but could not reach her.
