Tests for the novel coronavirus will be fully covered for patients whose health insurance is provided by the state's largest health insurers.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Cigna, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare all announced in news releases that they will waive the costs associated with testing for COVID-19.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield announced that it will "waive prior authorizations for diagnostic tests and for covered services that are medically necessary and consistent with CDC guidance for members if diagnosed with COVID-19," the company announced in a news release.
The company will also cover medically necessary diagnostic tests, consistent with CDC guidance, at no cost to members. It says it also will waive early medication refill limits on 30-day prescription maintenance medications, consistent with a member’s benefit plan.
“It is important that our members feel safe and secure knowing that they are able to pursue the proper care and testing they need to protect their health during this time of concern,” Vincent Nelson, M.D., vice president, medical affairs and interim chief medical officer at Blue Cross said in a news release.
UnitedHealthcare said in a news release it would "waive member cost sharing, including copays, coinsurance and deductibles, for COVID-19 diagnostic testing provided at approved locations in accordance with CDC guidelines for all commercial insured, Medicaid and Medicare members. UnitedHealthcare will also work to support self-insured customers who choose to implement similar actions."
Cigna said it would "waive all co-pays and cost-shares for Coronavirus testing for our customers that is recommended by their health practitioners," according to a news release.
Aetna said it would "waive co-pays for all diagnostic testing related to COVID-19," according to a news release. Aetna also announced it would offer zero co-pay telemedicine visits – for any reason, for the next 90 days.
