New Sandwich Postmaster takes oath of office

Longtime postal employee and Officer-In-Charge Shermeen Hill was sworn in as postmaster of the Sandwich Post Office in a small ceremony Friday afternoon, March 6, in the back of the post office.

Hill has worked for the United States Postal Service for 21 years and has lived in Sandwich for 15 years. She got her start with the postal service thanks to her aunt, a retired postmaster in Big Rock who encouraged her to apply and take the required test.

Two weeks later, she had been called in to start her work, beginning her career in Batavia as a letter carrier.

"Sandwich has always been a great community, so as soon as this job opened up, I knew that I really wanted it," Hill said.

"I'm completely honored and very humbled by the whole situation. I feel like being a postmaster is a very prestigious job and I'm just very excited to become a part of the Sandwich Post Office."

Hill replaced Scott Schuler, who was first appointed to the position in 2015.

Before taking the oath of office, colleagues of Hill, including Abby Maamari, officer-in-charge of Clarendon Hills praised her accomplishments and dedication.

"You know you can trust her to get the job done," Maamari said. "It feels so good to see someone with Shermeen's dedication and loyalty be promoted in our company."

Hill's name will be noted in the annals of the Library of Congress, and her change in position has already been made on the USPS website.
