Update: DeKalb police say car damaged Monday on Park Avenue was not hit by gunfire

DeKALB – DeKalb police Cmdr. Craig Woodruff said investigators have determined a car damaged in an incident Monday was not hit by bullets.

He said police located the vehicle about 6 p.m. Monday, after officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of Park Avenue about 1:15 p.m. Monday. When they first arrived, the car they believed to be involved was not there.

Woodruff said police are not yet releasing where the vehicle is located.

The city of DeKalb sent out an alert about 2:15 p.m. Monday warning residents to avoid the area because of a heavy police presence while officers worked. About 3:30 p.m., another alert issued an all clear.

Woodruff said police are still trying to determine all those who were involved, and no arrests have yet been made.

"We got on the scene, and it was involving a car," Woodruff said. "We ended up finding evidence that the car was damaged."

Investigators set up a perimeter around the area to locate the car.

Woodruff said DeKalb police are still interviewing witnesses, and he does not believe there is any threat to the public at this time.

It is unclear how many people were involved and no injuries were reported, he said.

Police from Northern Illinois University, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois State Police are assisting the investigation.
