DeKALB – A DeKalb gym was forced to close temporarily Tuesday morning after an elderly woman drove through the front window, said DeKalb Fire Chief Jeff McMaster.
Crews from the DeKalb Fire Department responded to the call that a car had driven through the front of Anytime Fitness, 901 S. Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb around 10:50 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, crews found a black Honda Civic had shattered the front window and ended up 25 feet into the store.
"The car was completely inside the store," McMaster said. "Various pieces of exercise equipment were hit but no utilities like gas lines or anything of that nature. It was a clean hit, as it drove through the door frame. It was an elderly person who drove through the storefront, so it was an accident."
No injuries to the driver, gym staff or patrons were reported, McMaster said. The driver was evaluated by DeKalb paramedics on the scene but refused treatment. Her car was towed.
The location will be closed until repairs can be made and Anytime Fitness is advising members to go to their Sycamore Road facility in the meantime, according to the gym's Facebook page. Members are encouraged to use the chain's Sycamore facility in the meantime, 2579 Sycamore Road.
For those who usually go to the Zumba classes at 7 p.m. in DeKalb, they're invited to attend the class at the Sycamore gym, the post shows.
"For a bad incident, it was the best outcome to you could have," McMaster said. "Minimum damage to the building and nobody injured."
