DeKALB – A Chicago-area man is dead after a shooting in DeKalb’s north side late Sunday, confirmed interim DeKalb Police Chief John Petragallo, although no arrests have been made.
The man was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital early Monday, DeKalb County Coroner Denny Miller said.
“We’re still trying to get a hold of the mother,” said Miller, whose office will not release the name until the family is notified. Miller said the victim was from suburban Chicago.
Petragallo said there are two additional victims who suffered gunshot wounds in the shooting and were taken to nearby hospitals, although police did not disclose their names or conditions. The DeKalb Police Department is working with the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office on the investigation. Petragallo did not confirm whether an arrest was made in connection with the incident, or whether there was more than one shooter.
“We’re still actively pursuing leads,” Petragallo said. “But there’s no reason to believe there’s a threat to the public.”
DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato said he got a call about 2 a.m. Monday concerning the shooting, and his office is working as DeKalb police try to unveil what happened.
“At this point, there hasn’t been any charges filed,” Amato said. “Nobody is in custody.”
Petragallo said forthcoming information was delayed Monday afternoon as investigators work on the case, but he expects to have more information on the shooting Tuesday morning.
Petragallo said DeKalb police responded to a shots-fired call shortly before midnight Sunday at the Hunter DeKalb apartment complex in the 900 block of West Hillcrest Drive. Crime scene tape was observed around the building Monday.
“Upon arrival, the officers located a gunshot wound victim, and started the investigation,” Petragallo said. “At this point, we’ve identified all parties involved.”
DeKalb police pursued a suspect who fled the apartment, and were assisted by DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies in the pursuit, which passed through Sycamore.
Law enforcement managed to stop the car on Plank and Linden roads about midnight and found two additional people in the car with gunshot wounds.
Petragallo did not say which of the victims was the deceased.
DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said his deputies also are assisting with the investigation.
“We stayed [on the scene] until everything was secure,” Scott said.
