DeKALB – A Malta man is facing life-threatening injuries at a Rockford hospital after a crash involving his motorcycle and a car on Fourth Street Tuesday night.
The driver of a 2015 Volkswagon Passat, Alexandria Bailey, 25, of Cortland, was charged by DeKalb police with failure to yield in the crash that occurred in the 1100 block of South Fourth Street around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
DeKalb Police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas said the Malta man, 28, was heading northbound on Fourth Street on a 2018 Yamaha when Bailey’s car turned right from Tyler Street heading northbound on Fourth.
“It appears the car failed to yield but we’re also trying to reconstruct the crash,” Lekkas said.
He said the crash is still under investigation as police work to determine if speed from the motorcycle was also a factor.
The Malta man was taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital and then airlifted to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he is listed in critical condition, Lekkas said, with severe intestinal injuries and broken bones.
The area of South Fourth Street from Barb Boulevard to Taylor Street was shut down until shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday while crews worked to clear the road.
