GENOA – Route 72 west of Genoa was reopened about 1 a.m. Thursday, but there may be traffic interruptions throughout the day as Commonwealth Edison replaces the utility poles knocked down Wednesday afternoon.

Lt. Jim Burgh with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office said the road was closed as the sheriff's office, Com Ed and the tow company worked to ensure the downed wires were not live, move the truck and clean up spilled garbage. To support the wires overnight a series of trucks were brought in and parked on top of pallets to prevent them from sinking into the dirt, he said.

Com Ed would be installing the new utility poles should be placed Thursday, Burgh said. Police may need to direct traffic as they do, he said, but nothing was certain yet.

On Wednesday, the driver of the 2000 Kenworth semitrailer said that he was traveling west on Route 72 at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday east of Pleasant Hill Road when a vehicle in front of him stopped suddenly, forcing him to swerve off the roadway, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. The truck struck three Commonwealth Edison utility poles and overturned, according to the release.

The trailer, which was full of trash, and a utility pole caught fire, according to the release.
