Letter: Guns used for defense about as often as by criminals

To the Editor:

In response to Lonnie Stojan's letter to the Editor of Sept.11th.

One. Automatic weapons have no place in our society. Correct.

Citizens can not make or buy automatic weapons unless you want to go to prison. But we are allowed to buy semi automatic weapons, which are not military grade, but look-alikes.

Two. Stojan wants to know why anyone should own a weapon?

President Barack Obama, as part of 23 executive orders he signed, commissioned the Center for Disease Control to conduct a $10 million study on gun violence.

The CDC report showed that defensive gun use by crime victims is at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year.

So that means that guns were used 500,000 times or more for self defense.

So your common sense would be to disarm the citizens so as to make us unable to defend our lives, businesses, children and spouses from the criminals?

The criminals do not follow the gun laws.

The CDC study is entitled "Priorities For Research To Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence".
