DeKALB – Administrators recognized two staff members at DeKalb School District 428’s Early Learning and Development Center after their swift action helped to save the life of a student.

At the end of the Wednesday school day, health assistant Rissa Bruno heard a call for a student who was not breathing. She rushed to the room and began performing CPR.

“He was turning blue,” she said. Bruno said she performed chest compressions and rescue breathing until paramedics arrived.

She said the timing was important. Another few minutes and the student could have been on the bus when the incident happened.

ELDC Principal Lisa Gorchels rode in the ambulance with the student to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital. She said the student was doing well and resting comfortably.

Bruno and Gorchels were recognized by District 428 Superintendent Jamie Craven in front of staff members Thursday afternoon for their quick response.

“I was just doing my job,” Bruno said.
