Community foundation grant helps Meals on Wheels

The DeKalb County Community Foundation awarded a grant to Voluntary Action Center Meals on Wheels, assisting in the purchase of a new refrigerator for senior meal programs in southern DeKalb County.

A large refrigeration unit at Fox Valley Community Services kitchen recently broke down, affecting the ability of cooks to provide the senior lunch program, adult day service and Meals on Wheels. VAC applied for emergency funding from the community foundation to replace the refrigerator.

“Fresh food delivery schedules were adjusted through this transition,” Mike Neuenkirchen, vice president of VAC’s south region operations, said in a news release. “Without a new refrigerator, however, we were concerned we might have to shift food preparation to our Sycamore site, and that could have caused a reduction in services.

“We are very thankful to the DeKalb County Community Foundation for responding so quickly to our need,” he said in the release.

The new, larger refrigerator was delivered Sept 9.

VAC of DeKalb County provides quality nutrition and transportation for seniors, disabled individuals and the public.
