Prep roundup: DeKalb, Kaneland cross country teams win meets

Manny Yepiz took third place in 15:13.16, helping lead the Barbs to a team victory at the Plainfield Central Wildcat Invitational Saturday.

The Barbs finished with 47 team points, well ahead of second place Plainfield Central (98).

Riley Newport added a fifth-place finish in a time of 15:22. Also in the top 10 for the Barbs were Aidan Donohue (eighth in 15:40.87) and Juan Castro (10th in 15:57.74). Eric Jang took 21st and Thomas Gil was 25th.

Knights win at Crystal Lake: Kaneland, with 43 team points, the Knights finished well ahead of second place Glenbrook South (67) at the Crystal Lake Invite in a field of 20 teams.

Austin Adams led the Knights individually in second place (16:20). Daniel Occhipinti took fourth, Isaiah Dallal was eighth and Ethan Walker took 12th.

Other top finishers for the Knights included Ethan Neal (17th). Ben Durbala finished in 17:45 in his first cross country race.

"Glad we could get a race in and felt like it was a good day for us," Kaneland coach Chad Clarey said. "We didn't reach our milestone for the varsity that was a target between 3-5 runners, but we were close."

Timberwolves led by Larson: Jolee Larson finished 13th at IC's meet at Oregon with a time of 20:34.

Caroline Bend finished 48th and Jill Shotsberger was 60th.


IC scores 4 in second half: Indian Creek raced back from a halftime deficit to defeat Morris 6-3.

The Timberwolves had trailed 3-2 at the break. Drew Gaston scored three goals and assisted on another. Brennen McNally scored twice and added an assist. Also with assists for Indian Creek were Mason Gauger (2) and Cam Russell (1).

Cogs exert offensive control in win: Genoa-Kingston raced to a 4-2 victory and outshot Harvest Christian 27-9.

Two Cogs goals came from Junior Leon, with both assisted by Eagan Reans. Leo Rocha scored as well, with the assist coming from Leon. Aiden Tomlinson also scored a goal.

Genoa-Kingston is now 4-3 this season.

Barbs tie Hononegah: DeKalb tied once more in a 2-2 result against Hononegah.

Isaak Cordova scored off a Julian Garcia assist. Mauro Talamantes scored in the 50th minute via an Ilir Redzepi assist.

The Barbs are now 2-0-3.

Spartans fall to fourth: Sycamore took fourth place at the Addison Trail tournament, falling in the placing game 3-2.

Miles Guiborat and Austin Bunge each netted a goal for the Spartans.


Barbs fourth at Batavia: Jack Paeglow's score of 70 earned him medalist honors at the Batavia Invite at Pheasant Run as DeKalb took fourth as a team.

The Barbs' team score was good enough to tie for second in strokes, but the fifth individual player score was used as a tiebreaker, pushing DeKalb back to fourth.

Will Schimbke carded a 75 to take 15th while Danny Franzene and James Keck each recorded a 77.

Kaneland took seventh at the meet.


Cogs 1-3 at tournament: Genoa-KIngston fell three times at the Blackhawk Invite and grabbed a victory.

The Cogs fell to West Aurora (25-16, 25-9), Vernon Hills (25-9, 25-18) and Sycamore (25-20). The Cogs defeated Streamwood 25-19, 25-13.


Royals grab tight victory: Hinckley-Big Rock defeated DePue in three 25-16, 19-25, 26-24.

Payton Barry totaled seven kills. Tessa Prellberg attacked her way to nine points, adding three aces and nine digs.
