To the Editor:
State Sen. Dave Syverson (R-Rockford) was recently on record suggesting that a new casino should be built on Interstate 90 instead of downtown Rockford because it would attract more people from DeKalb and McHenry counties.
As someone from McHenry County, I don't care where it is, but I am concerned about the rudderless Republican Party.
Republicans, including Syverson, can't seem to figure out what they stand for. Are they conservative or libertarian? Do they believe government should promote stable families or allow individuals maximum freedom?
Gambling is a tricky issue. We know it takes a heavy toll on the poor and those neurologically prone to addiction, but most people also acknowledge that personal freedom is important. It is fine to debate where the line should be drawn, but Sen. Syverson's comments are downright troubling.
Republicans, even the most libertarian ones, should never debate how to get the most people into a casino.
Gambling, at best, should be something that is merely tolerated. It should not be encouraged, Sen. Syverson.
