1st portable classroom building in place at SHS

Contractors level one of the two newer, larger portable classroom buildings into place at Sandwich High School. SANDWICH – Rick Schmitt, the superintendent of Sandwich School District 430, reported at a recent meeting of the school board that one of the two used, portable buildings, purchased earlier this year from St. Charles Schools, is in place at the east end of Sandwich High School.

The two buildings contain a total of 16 classrooms.

The two newer, larger buildings are replacing seven smaller, portable buildings that were more than 30 years old and contained nine classrooms.

The newer portable buildings, which include restrooms, central heat and air conditioning, need to have plumbing and electrical hookups completed before the school can clean and paint the structure before occupancy at the start of school Aug. 16.

In other matters, Schmitt announced that Lynn G. Haskin Elementary School has “achieved the Gold Circle of Quality” for its Preschool For All program in ExceleRate Illinois, the state’s quality recognition and improvement system for early learning and development programs. The school was given the top award based on monitoring visits and collecting evidence using specific scales.

Sandwich schools have for many years offered screenings for 3- to 5-year-olds whose parents think might have developmental concerns. The screenings are on a regular basis.

Since school is in session starting Aug. 16, parents of new students must report to their attendance center on or soon after Aug. 5 to complete the registration process and/or pay fees. Requirements before enrollment of new students are three types of proof of residency, one being either a rental, lease or mortgage document, and a signed/notarized affidavit.

All students entering pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades must have a current physical examination (including required immunizations) completed before being admitted to school. Sports physicals may not be used for sixth- or ninth-grade physical requirements.

All students entering 12th grade are required to show proof of having received two doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine unless the first dose was given on or after the student’s 16th birthday.

A complete listing of all the state-mandated health requirements for school can be found on the district website, www.sandwich430.org. Students not completing these requirements may be subject to exclusion from school.

Action taken at the school board meeting included the resignation of Nicole Leitner, third-grade teacher at Prairie View School; the retirement in 2023 of Doni Morgan, third-grade teacher at Woodbury School; and the employments of Shannon Stahl, third-grade teacher at Prairie View School, and Robin Huhn, secretary at Prairie View School.

The next regular meeting of the Sandwich School Board will be at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Sandwich Middle School’s Resource Center.
