Fire engulfs home on Mason St. in DeKalb, causes $275K damage

$275,000 worth of damage to house, blaze was accidental, officials say

A single-family home in the 1200 block of Mason Street caught fire early Tuesday, causing an estimated $275,000 worth of damage.

DeKALB – Fire officials say a blaze engulfed a single-family home in the 1200 block of Mason Street early Tuesday and displaced a family.

DeKalb fire crews were called to the home about 2:30 a.m. and arrived to find a rapidly
advancing fire in the home, according to a news release from the DeKalb Fire Department.

The fire was coming from the rear of the home, and caused $275,000 worth of damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it has been ruled accidental, according to the release.

Crews searched the home for people, but found none and determined the family was able to escape safely.

Firefighters worked to limit damage to nearby homes, according to the release. It took an hour and a half to bring the fire under control, according to the release.

Fire investigators went through the home to try and see if they could restore any property; however, the home was condemned, according to the release.

Firefighters from Burlington, Cortland, Genoa-Kingston, Kaneville, Malta, Maple Park, Rochelle, Shabbona, Sycamore and Waterman fire departments assisted.
