MAPLE PARK – Emilee Erickson wasn’t struggling, per se, early – after all she had given up only one hit and struck out five through the first two innings.
The Kaneland junior allowed the first two batters in the third inning to reach base, but then she set down the final nine batters she faced in the game, finishing with 12 strikeouts in the Knights’ 10-0, six-inning win over Plano on Friday in the championship game of the Class 3A Kaneland Regional.
Coach Mike Kuefler said he made Erickson go to the bullpen after the second inning for a couple of extra pitches.
“She zeroed it in,” Kuefler said. “We had her go behind the dugout, and I told her 10 pitches, kiddo. And she zeroed in those pitches she did. She got it done. She did a good job for us.”
