Local roundup: Bunge gets walk-off as Sycamore baseball beats Sandwich

Austin Bunge singled home Austin Steele with one out in the bottom of the seventh, leading to a 5-4 win for Sycamore against Sandwich on Saturday.

It was Steele’s second hit and second run of the day and Bunge’s first at-bat. Steele also allowed one earned run and three hits in four innings. Logan Riley was 3 for 4, scored twice and pitched an inning to get the win – although he entered the seventh with the Spartans ahead, 4-3.


Spartans slug past Sandwich: Gracyn Gabriel and Haley Trela homered in a 6-1 Spartans’ win.

Mindy Smits drove in two runs, while Gabriel had two hits and scored twice. Milani Sablan struck out seven in three innings of relief, while Faith Reynolds started and got the win.

Kaneland blasts West Aurora: The Knights pounded out 15 hits, including three by Hailey Roach. One of Roach’s hits was a home run, in a
15-7 win.

Donatela Sommesi had four hits and drove in four runs. Rose Roach and Olivia Ortegel had two hits each. Emilee Erickson struck out 10 in five innings.

The win was No. 100 for Mike Kuefler as the Knights’ coach.

DeKalb falls at Elkhart: It was a double no-hitter as the Barbs lost in Wisconsin, 2-0.

Mallory Warner didn’t allow a hit in six innings, allowing two earned runs.

She struck out nine and walked 11.


NIU’s regular-season finale washed out: The Huskies game against Bowling Green was wiped out.

Northern Illinois (18-34, 14-12) will start play in the Mid-American Conference tournament Wednesday. The No. 5 Huskies will face No. 4 Miami (Ohio) at 5 p.m. in Avon, Ohio. NIU won two of three against Miami
