The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to kick off summer in style with several community events and festivities lined up. You won’t want to miss out on all the fun, so mark your calendars now. For a full list of events, be sure to check out our website, www.genoaareachamber.com.
The Genoa Farmer’s Market will start its season May 25. We will be hosting five markets this year, on the fourth Saturday of each month from May to September. (May 25, June 22, July 27, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28). Markets will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the corner of Route 72 and Genoa Street in downtown Genoa. Every market will feature more than 20 vendors offering a variety of products, including homemade jams, honey, breads, chocolates, eggs, fresh produce, jewelry, flowers, soaps and much more. Join us for live music, inflatables, special guests and local favorites. The markets are a great place to meet up with friends, spend the afternoon with your family or just swing by for some quick shopping.
Sharing the day with our first farmers market will be our inaugural School’s Out for Summer Celebration. The Genoa Chamber is teaming up with the Kishwaukee Valley Wanderers to bring this day full of activities. You can join us for one – or all the events – on May 26 at the Genoa Veteran’s Club, 311 S. Washington St.
We will start the day with a Poker walk at 10 a.m. This event is family-friendly and will begin and end at the Veterans Club. You will go to participating businesses while enjoying a walk through Genoa and collecting selfies. On your return to the Vet’s home, you will be entered to win one of the several raffle prizes.
From 2 to 5 p.m. at the VFW, the PTO will have its famous fun fair, brought to you by all of the Volksfest sponsors. There will be games, an inflatable obstacle course and food for sale.
From 5 to 10 p.m., the “Band” Garden will be open and will have special discounts for all veterans. There will be live music from several bands for your listening enjoyment. Starting the show will be the student-led band, Diamondback. Next in the lineup will be Northern Illinois University’s Big, Bad ’n’ Brassy; and wrapping up the evening will be the teacher-led band, No F’s Given.
General admission will be $8; all veterans and children age 10 and younger will get in free.
Also at the event, we will be collecting any used band instruments for future students. Bring instruments down from the attic, out of the closet or up from the basement and your entry will be free. Donate your old instrument and give it new life. We hope you come to celebrate the start of summer with us.
On June 5, royalty will be returning to Genoa! This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Genoa Days King and Queen scholarship contest. The Genoa Chamber and member businesses recognize the importance of education, as well as the increasing costs that come with it. The King and Queen Scholarship contest is an opportunity to acknowledge our community youth and provide them with financial assistance to reach their future goals. Join us for the final judging at 8 p.m. June 5 on the main stage in downtown Genoa. We can’t wait to see who will be crowned this year’s King and Queen!
We hope to see you in Genoa soon. If you have questions about any of our events, call the Chamber at 815-784-2212 or visit www.genoaareachamber.com to learn more. Stop by our office at 113 N. Genoa St. for information on Genoa, coupons and more. We would love to meet you in person. Come explore Genoa!
