Breaking: Cortland man charged with attempted murder in stabbing

Father was stabbed by son during fight in Cortland incident

CORTLAND – A Cortland man who police say stabbed his father during an argument Saturday was arrested Tuesday on several charges including attempted murder.

Ricardo A.G. Vasquez, 24, of the 100 block of Paw Paw Avenue, was taken to DeKalb County jail without incident and is being held without bond.

Vasquez, who had been hospitalized since the incident at his home, was arrested at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital around 3 p.m. Tuesday. In addition to the attempted murder charge, he is charged with aggravated domestic battery, armed violence, and criminal damage to property, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

If convicted of attempted murder, he could face six to 30 years in prison.

“Once he was released from the hospital, we arrested him [on the warrant],” DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said. “He’s been there since [Saturday] from injuries sustained during the altercation.”

First responders were dispatched to the area around 9:45 p.m. Saturday, police have said. A man, later identified as Ricardo Vasquez, Ricardo A.G. Vasquez’s father, ran to a neighbor’s home and asked them to call for help.

Upon arrival, police learned the father had been stabbed. He was taken to OSF St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford with serious injuries. Sullivan said the elder Vasquez’s condition had stabilized by Sunday morning.

Ricardo A.G. Vasquez is currently on probation for an earlier felony conviction stemming from an incident in Sycamore, according to DeKalb County court records. In October 2016, he was charged with aggravated battery to a pregnant woman, domestic battery and battery to an unborn child.

Police said he admitted to trying to punch his pregnant girlfriend in the abdomen during an argument over her plans to take their 4-month-old child and leave him. The victim stabbed him during the incident.

Vasquez pleaded guilty in October 2018 and was sentenced to two years of probation and a domestic violence prevention class in that case, records show.

Sullivan said he thought the elder Vasquez had been discharged from the hospital, and the nursing supervisor on call Tuesday evening at St. Anthony’s said that he was no longer in the ICU and not listed on her patient sheet.

Sullivan said the investigation is still ongoing.
