Indian Creek Timberwolves
Last season: 15-11, 11-3 in Little Ten Conference, lost to Somonauk 6-5 in the Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock Regional Final.
Keep an eye on: Junior Tyler Swanson should play outfield and see more time on the mound after some arm trouble limited his ability to pitch last season. Swanson batted .434 and drove in 28 runs.
Also: Griffin Rissman, sr., C; Tim McNally, sr., 3B/P; Caleb Cursio, sr., 2B; Cooper Larsen, jr., P/OF; R.J. McCoy, jr., SS; Matt McGoo, jr., 1B; Jordan Hartman, so., P/SS; Brennan McNally. so., OF.
Coach Kevin Poterek’s comments:
• “[We are looking] to build off the finish we had last year when we put a better second half of the season together. … I haven’t had this many upperclassmen in a long time, so [we’re] going back to good, fundamental baseball.”
•“Getting through regionals and getting on to sectionals, every coach wants that. … We have a lot of good talent. It could be one guy one game and then it could be some guy you wouldn’t expect.”
The lowdown: As on the basketball court, the Timberwolves will be the beneficiaries of the combined talents of Indian Creek and Paw Paw athletes, but that means a move up to Class 2A. two of IC’s three LTC losses were to Somonauk. With returning experience, Poterek hopes to compete for the conference crown while acknowledging Somonauk is the team to beat.
Last season: 11-11, lost in the Class 1A Aurora Christian Regional final to Aurora Christian.
Keep an eye on: Senior Nathan Hoffman, who will pitch and play some middle infield.
Also: John Collins, sr., Mitchell Manka, sr., UTL; Elliott Mains, jr., C/1B; Ty Kilcullen, so. 3B/SS/P/OF; Josue Rubio, so., 2B; Austin Brantley, so., OF/C.
Coach Nathan Hoffman’s comments:
•“I think we have a better team this year than we did last year. We have a lot of pieces stepping up … I’m really happy with this group of guys I’ve got, and I truly think we can do something special this season.”
The lowdown: Hiawatha lost two senior starters from a season ago, but brings back what Hoffman believes is a talented core that he hopes is aided by the freshman class.
