DeKALB – The flexibility that enabled Sutton Smith to succeed at a prolific level in college is winning him some favor among NFL scouts as the former Northern Illinois Universtiy All-American defensive end has been receiving more looks, in his own words, as a “hybrid outside linebacker/pass rusher.”
Smith did not participate in drills at Wednesday’s NIU Pro Day, at which scouts from 20 NFL teams were in attendance, but spoke to the media about the process he has undergone in recent months to prepare for a future professional career. NFL prospect Max Scharping participated in drills as part of a group composed of 18 athletes.
“There was a lot of people saying that I put on a clinic tape for linebacker drills and stuff like that, and I’ve never played linebacker,” Smith said. “So just being talked about that positively like that is a really good thing and that helps my spirit with it.”
