NIU prof., WNIJ producer to be first to bike pedal entire Rock River Trail

THERESA, Wis. – Dan Libman, Northern Illinois University faculty member, and WNIJ producer Carl Nelson plan to be the first to complete the 320-mile Rock River Trail by bicycle and will air daily broadcast updates on WNIJ-FM 89.5 and WNIJ.org in DeKalb from Monday through Friday.

Libman and Nelson will use the five-day trek to explore historical, cultural and environmental features of the Rock River Valley. Several others have paddled or motorbiked the entire trail but Libman and Nelson hope to be the first to pedal it, according to a Northern Public Radio news release.

The Rock River Trail stretches from Fond du Lac County in Wisconsin to the Mississippi River in Rock Island.

Stops will include Watertown and Beloit in Wisconsin and Rockford, Oregon, Prophetstown and Rock Island in Illinois. Covered subject matters will include changing river ecology, the Blackhawk legacy, the Eagle’s Nest Art Colony, the Prophetstown fires and other current events, along with talks with local experts sharing their knowledge of the area along the way.

Additional content of the trip is available on WNIJ.org and on the WNIJ Facebook page.
