SYCAMORE – The argument that led to Moorea Des Roches' murder began because Michael Kulpin thought she had taken too long to respond to his text messages.
Kulpin, 22, told police he was "super angry" and thought she was cheating on him, he said. Des Roches, 19, arrived at Kulpin's DeKalb apartment with their 1-year-old son after 11 p.m. on June 3, 2016. Not long after, a heated argument ensued that turned physical.
"We were in each other's face, really, really close, screaming, and the baby's crying," Kulpin said in a videotaped interview with DeKalb police on June 6, 2016. "I ended up smacking her. She went to hit me back, but I stopped her, and she punched me with her other hand."
Although Kulpin claimed he was punched, photographs taken of his face by police showed no marks or bruises.
