DeKALB – Treveda Redmond, who spent 15 years teaching in DeKalb schools, said she hopes to give away 1,300 backpacks full of school supplies Saturday at the Back to School Bash.
The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sports and Recreation Center, 1765 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.
Now the principal of Beyer Elementary School in Rockford, Redmond has organized the bash each of the past five years and said she still is committed to providing resources for DeKalb residents in need.
“A student’s first day of school without supplies is a heavy burden for teachers and families,” Redmond said. “This is an event dedicated to serving the DeKalb community and the families that need assistance.”
The Northern Illinois Food Bank also will be on hand to provide donated goods. Redmond said the event is lively and a DJ will perform.
Transportation will be available through shuttle buses that will run during the event from Huntley Middle School, 1515 S. Fourth St., and Littlejohn Elementary School, 1121 School St.
Redmond said that leftover backpacks still will be available at New Hope Baptist Church, 1201 Twombly Road. Call the church at 815-756-7906.
