The Fox Valley Carving Club, in cooperation with the Oswego Area Carvers carving club and with assistance from the North Suburban Carving Club, will host the Gathering of Woodcarvers Woodcarving Art Festival from Aug. 7 to 13 at the Sandwich Fairgrounds.
Carving classes will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and a public exhibition of woodcarving art will be on display from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 10 to 12, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 13. Classes are limited in size and require advance registration online at gatheringofwoodcarvers.com. Admission to the exhibition is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for children.
The Gathering of Woodcarvers brings artists together from across the country. Instructors include such notable carvers as Josh Guge, who took top honors at the International Woodcarving Congress in June, winning the “Best of Show” award for the second year in a row. Guge is a world-class bird and fish carver who operates the Guge Institute in Elgin, teaching both adult and young aspiring woodcarvers.
Former Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine “Woodcarver of the Year” Vic Hood of Leipers Fork, Tennessee, will teach the art of bust carving with mallet and chisel. Relief and figure carver Dylan Goodson will be on hand, as will pyrography (wood burning) artist Michele Parsons. Parsons lives in North Carolina, while Goodson is a recent transplant from Rockford, Alabama, moving to Mohawk, Michigan, following his marriage in late 2016.
