Friday commemorates Barbs with 'Orange and Black Day'

DeKalb Acting Mayor Kris Povlsen declared Friday to be "Orange and Black Day" in the city and is asking all DeKalb residents to wear orange and black as a display of pride for the DeKalb High School boys basketball team.

At a Feb. 7 basketball game against Milwaukee Madison High School in Wisconsin, the coaches and DHS varsity boys' basketball team displayed "the ultimate sportsmanlike conduct" by having player Darius McNeal purposely miss two technical foul free throws when a opponent whose mother had died arrived late to the game, a city proclamation stated.

Johntell Franklin wanted to play in the game but since his name had not been entered in the scorebook before the start of the game, DeKalb was awarded a technical foul and allowed to shoot two free throws. The DHS coaches did not want the free throws but the referees insisted they be taken.

The DHS team will be recognized Saturday, along with Milwaukee Madison, during the Milwaukee Bucks game. The night before, on Friday, the DeKalb boys basketball team will be collecting donations to help the family of Milwaukee Madison star Johntell Franklin during the Barbs' home game against Rochelle.

The Barbs' sports boosters will also donate the proceeds from the game's 50/50 raffle to Franklin's family.
