Looking to give your kitchen an update? Before you embark on the project, there are several factors to keep in mind, such as your budget, how you want your space to function, and your family’s needs. Ronesha Peña, owner of the Sycamore-based Fargo Home Furnishings, offers these tips:
1. Don’t overspend
Home renovation television shows can often set unrealistic expectations. “They make you want to have the most dazzling looking kitchen but overspending on remodels doesn’t usually prove profitable for resale,” said Peña.
While do-it-yourself remodeling projects can be time-consuming, they can also help keep costs down. For instance, instead of replacing the cabinets, consider instead a cosmetic upgrade such as having them painted.
2. Make the space workable
Keep in mind how you can maximize your kitchen’s efficiency. One easy way to make it more functional is by placing items near where they will be used. “Think about how you would use kitchen items for ease of process,” Peña said. “Place seasonings and utensils near the stove and breakfast bowls near the breakfast table.”
Keep cutlery near dishwasher for easy unloading, and cooking implements, such as skillets and spatulas, near the stove. When it comes to small appliances, only leave out those that you use several times a week and put the rest away.
3. Microwave height matters
Microwaves are one of the most essential kitchen appliances. That’s why it is important when remodeling to keep its placement in mind. “Think about who uses the microwave the most,” suggests Peña. “In most homes, kids love heating things in the microwaves so find the best height location for a kid-friendly kitchen environment.”
