Living room makeover simpler than you think

Want to give your living room a makeover but find the task intimidating?

“Tackling a decorating project for any room can seem so stressful and overwhelming but don't panic,” advises Ronesha Peņa, owner of the Sycamore-based Fargo Home Furnishings. “It's not as hard as you think.”

To start the process, determine your timeframe.

“Decorating a room can take a while so give yourself ample time to work with ideas,” Peņa said.

“Also include time for the pieces chosen to be delivered.”

Have no idea what you want for your new look? Check out Pinterest and Houzz for inspiration.

“These are great sites to go to for new looks and ideas,” said Peņa.

While some decorators may advise discarding everything in the room and starting with a clean slate, Peņa said that can feel very overwhelming.

Instead, she said, “go through the room and look for the focal point, whether it be a fireplace or an entertainment center. If you love that area, build on it.”

What items should you splurge on for your redecorating project?

“Your big ticket items should be your statement pieces,” Peņa said. “Splurge on the pieces that will be used the most such as the sofas, accent chairs and rugs. You can then blend the higher priced items with lower priced accessories thus allowing your statement pieces to stand out more.”

While color scheme is an important aspect of your project, she advises people choose paint color once they have confirmed the look of their living room pieces.

“Remember, your walls aren't your focal point, unless you are creating an accent wall,” she said.

“Your wall color should 'speak' to all the pieces in the room as a final blending accessory to bring the room together.”
