Redemption, champions and inspiration across DeKalb County

DeKALB – Detweiller Park in Peoria was Marc Dubrick’s singular focus for the cross country season.

PEORIA – DeKalb sophomore Kelsey Schrader felt her chances to win the Class 2A girls race at the IHSA Cross Country State Meet on Saturday was as good as anyone’s.

DeKALB – This week was a little different for the DeKalb girls cross country team.

ELBURN – Kaneland cross country runners continue to crow about a banner accomplishment nearly two decades in the making. It will not take as long for them to stop.

BELVIDERE – Sure, the announcement that the Kaneland girls cross country team made it to the Class 2A state meet was a big deal.

DeKALB – Forget the fact that today is the sectional meet, DeKalb’s Marc Dubrick is just happy to see a flat course.

The Indian Creek volleyball team finished in eighth place at the Stillman Valley tournament, losing to West Carroll, 25-18, 25-21 and Rochelle, 25-18, 25-6, but beating Freeport, to finish the regular season 21-12 overall.

ELBURN – Kelsey Schrader hung back in third place for the first mile of Saturday’s Class 2A Kaneland cross country regional. The DeKalb sophomore knew the three-mile course well, and she was confident she’d be able to take over the race on one of the hills later on the course.

DeKalb sophomore Kelsey Schrader won the individual title at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference girls cross country meet at Geneseo on Saturday, leading the Barbs to a third-place finish.

Indian Creek's boys soccer team beat Paw Paw, 6-1, in the consolation championship of the Little Ten Conference tournament on Saturday at Hinckley-Big Rock.

DeKalb's boys golf team advanced four individuals out of the Class 3A Larkin Regional on Tuesday. Mason Struthers, Zack Price, Nick Bourdages and Matt Hoyle all moved on to Monday's Bartlett Sectional.

The DeKalb girls cross country team, led by first-place overall finisher Kelsey Schrader, won the East Peoria Invitational on Saturday.

The DeKalb boys and girls cross country teams both took first in the Byron Invitational on Wednesday.

DeKalb junior Marc Dubrick finished fourth overall at the Eddington boys cross country invite, hosted Saturday by Kaneland. Dubrick finished in 16 minutes, 0.9 seconds to lead DeKalb to an eighth-place finish.

The IHSA announced regional assignments for all fall sports (except football, of course) on Friday.

Sycamore’s boys golf team edged out Kaneland, 154-157, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East showdown Tuesday.

DeKalb's Marc Dubrick finished 11th overall in the Class AA race at the Woodruff Cross Country Invitational and the Barbs finished 12th, while Kaneland was ninth and Sycamore was 22nd in the 47-team race at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

SPOTLIGHT ON ...

Kaneland senior Miroljub Marin continues to impress in his first cross country season. Marin won a triangular meet against East Aurora and Yorkville’s junior varsity squad, completing the 3-mile race at Elburn Woods in 17:06.

SPOTLIGHT ON ...

Led by Miroljub Marin, the Kaneland boys cross country team won a triangular meet, scoring 20 points to beat West Chicago (48) and Wheaton Academy (65). Marin won the race in 17.18.7. John Meisenger finished second for Kaneland in 17:19.56.

DeKALB – The second-place finisher at the Sycamore Cross Country Invitational wasn’t even close to DeKalb’s Kelsey Schrader.

DeKALB – It wasn’t that long ago that DeKalb girls volleyball coach Stephanie Gooden had to concern herself with not only her team’s practice plan for the day, but simple things like where everyone would put their equipment in the old DeKalb High School gym.

DeKALB – In the past, running in the summer was more of a hobby than anything for DeKalb’s Marc Dubrick. An accomplished swimmer, he spent more time in the pool than in his cross-trainers.
