Danks headed to DL

Posted on May 24, 2012 - 7:33 p.m.

White Sox starting pitcher John Danks hoped to generate momentum from his recent win in a scoreless outing against the Chicago Cubs.

Instead, Danks is headed to the 15-day disabled list because of a sore shoulder.

“I was hoping that would be the kind of start to jump-start my season,” Danks said Thursday at U.S. Cellular Field. “Now, here we are. It seems like if it’s not one thing, it’s something else at this point. [I’m] just trying to stay positive.”

The Sox will fill Danks’ spot in the rotation on Friday with 23-year-old lefthander Jose Quintana, who was 1-3 with a 2.77 ERA in nine starts for Double-A Birmingham. In his first stint with the Sox, Quintana pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief May 7 against Cleveland.

Sox manager Robin Ventura said he expected Danks to miss only two starts.

“Nothing serious,” Ventura said. “We’re just getting out in front of it.”

Danks, 27, said did not feel any discomfort Saturday against the Cubs despite leaving the game after 83 pitches. By Sunday, he felt something wrong in the back of his shoulder.

“I went the next day and tried to play catch, and I felt a little more sore than I’m used to and [I was] sore in a place I’m not used to being sore,” Danks said. “That was the only reason I said anything, and it turns out it’s a good thing I did.”

Danks, who is 3-4 with a 5.70 ERA in nine starts, showed a wry sense humor when asked whether he battled shoulder soreness earlier in the season.

“It isn’t the reason I’ve stunk to this point, if that’s what you are asking,” Danks said.
