Josh Howells has become an integral part of the offense for Olivet Nazarene’s football team this season.

The sophomore, who graduated from Sycamore, has enjoyed his first season in a dual role, and is fourth on the team with 30 receptions. He has 441 receiving yards, good for a 14.7 yards-per-catch average.

Howells has had four games with 70 or more receiving yards, including his season-high 117 yards on five receptions against St. Xavier on Sept. 19. His last 70-yard performance came in a 62-20 loss to the Saint Francis (Illinois) on Oct. 24. Howells finished with 71 yards on five receptions.

In Olivet Nazarene’s last game, a 45-35 loss to Taylor on Saturday, Howells had two receptions for 20 yards.

As a kicker, Howells is 3-for-7 in field-goal attempts, and has made 22 of his 23 extra-point attempts.

Olivet Nazarene concludes the season with a home contest against Malone on Saturday.

Thrower produces for Indiana against Minnesota: Former Sycamore standout Sam Thrower was inserted into the Indiana volleyball team’s lineup at middle blocker in the second game against Minnesota on Friday and produced kills on her first two attempts.

Indiana went on to suffer a 3-0 loss to the Golden Gophers.

Thrower played in two games, finishing with five kills and four errors on 14 attempts, good for a 7.1 hitting percentage. She also had a block.

The Hoosiers’ freshman has 88 kills and is averaging 1.66 kills per game. She has just 44 errors on 211 attempts, and boasts a 20.9 hitting percentage, and 43 blocks.

Horton scores, Huskies fall: Sycamore alum Brad Horton scored a goal in the 27th minute for the Northern Illinois men’s soccer team, but it wasn’t enough as Western Michigan took a 2-1 victory over the Huskies on Nov. 4.

The goal was Horton’s sixth of the season, which is good for a tie for first with Luis De La Cerda. Horton also has four assists and 16 points on the season.

Northern Illinois opens Mid-American Conference Tournament play on Friday against Akron.
