Waterman Lions Club Gobbler Gallop 5K Run/Walk will begin at 9 a.m. Nov. 21. The run begins and ends at Waterman Elementary School and covers a flat course along the scenic village streets. The distance is certified and the participants are individually timed. The club will award prizes to the overall top finishers and as well as top finishers in various age categories.

Karen Fenske, race director, is optimistic that by race day, many participants will have registered.

“We’re stuffing goodie bags for 200 this year,” said Fenske in a recent news release. The club will give the official Gobbler Gallop T-shirt to all who pre-register and to same-day registrants as long as supplies last. The shirts, prizes and post-event refreshments have been made possible by donations from various local businesses and corporations, thus allowing all participant registration fees to go directly to SightFirst II.

According to Fenske, runners and walkers may register online at signmeup.com or request an entry form by contacting her at 815-264-3576 or gobblergallop@live.com.

The number of participants in the event has grown each year. The first year, 144 participants crossed the finish line and last year 189 people were clocked.

Waterman Lions Club will use the proceeds from the Gobbler Gallop to fulfill its pledge to the SightFirst II Campaign of Lions Club International Foundation. With a minimum goal of $150 million, Lions surpassed the goal, raising more than $200 million through pledges and activities such as the Waterman Lions Club Gobbler Gallop.

Lions launched SightFirst to battle preventable blindness. Lions have restored sight to 7.3 million people through cataract surgeries and have prevented vision loss for another 20 million through distribution of sight-saving medications and lenses, according to the release. Lions have improved eye care services for hundreds of millions through building eye hospitals and clinics and training eye-care professionals.
