DeKALB – Police arrested a DeKalb man Wednesday who was wanted in connection with at least three local burglaries.

Bail was set Thursday at $25,000 for Daniel J. Velazquez, 22, of the 800 block of Dawn Court in DeKalb. Police believe Velazquez has entered at least three DeKalb homes since July with intent to commit a theft. He faces three counts of residential burglary, each a Class 1 felony.

“We believe he was involved with several others up in the [Fotis Drive] area,” said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler, adding that additional charges might be filed against Velazquez in the future. “Unfortunately, there are more than a few people out there committing these crimes.”

When police arrested Velazquez on a warrant Wednesday, they recovered evidence in his home that can be linked to three burglaries – a July 29 burglary in the 900 block of Fotis Drive, an Aug. 29 burglary in the 800 block of Fotis Drive and an Oct. 3 burglary in the 100 block of Regent Drive, according to court documents.

Some of the victims were home at the times of the burglaries, in which someone typically entered apartments through ground-level, unlocked patio doors. Investigators were given a tip about the 22-year-old through DeKalb County Crime Stoppers.

As many as 50 residential burglaries have occurred since June in an area just west of First Street and north of Annie Glidden Road, Spangler said.

“We were getting hit pretty hard up in that area,” he said. “The offender will admit to a great deal, but since these guys generally commit so many burglaries, we can’t necessarily connect them to a particular apartment.”
