WHAT'S IN YOUR LOCKER: Adams describes 'calculated chaos'

Each week, the Daily Chronicle will quiz a Chicago athlete about the contents of his locker. We decided to start with Bears defensive tackle Anthony Adams, whose locker is among the messiest at Halas Hall.
Adams, 29, has 13 tackles in seven games on the Bears defensive line this season. The 6-foot, 300-pound Detroit native and Penn State alum played four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before coming to Chicago, where he has started 17 games and tallied 60 tackles since 2007.
Bears reporter Tom Musick caught up with Adams before a recent practice to poke through his locker.
What’s that hat all about?
Oh man, somebody gave me that when I was in San Fran.
What’s it say?
“Fatback’s.” That was one of my nicknames, “Fatback.” So somebody got me a hat that said “Fatback’s BBQ” on it.
How’d you get that nickname?
My cousin gave it to me. It’s not anything that I’m proud of. It’s one of those nicknames that they keep calling you – “Fatback!” – and you don’t pay it any mind. Then all of a sudden, you just start answering to it. “What?”
What are some other nicknames you had?
Double-A, Fatback, Spice. That one was from high school. A couple others. Too many to mention.
So this locker is like your cubicle, right?
Yeah, this is like calculated chaos. I know where everything is. I’ve got sweats for when it gets cold, T-shirts, socks, shoes, pictures of my kid, pictures of my wife, hats, gloves, everything I need. I’ve even got a book bag in here.
Is this what your room at home looks like, too?
Nah, nah. My room is the exact opposite.
You didn’t want to decorate your locker for Halloween or anything?
I’m not a big Halloween guy, man. In Detroit, we had this thing I’m not too proud of, but the night before Halloween was called “Devil’s Night.” There were a lot of burnings and stuff. I was more worried about my house getting burned down, so I didn’t really want to celebrate Halloween.
How old is your boy in this picture?
He’s 1. He’ll be 2 in January. Got another one on the way.
You’ll have to clear off some room for new baby pictures.
Yeah, I’ve got to clean up, man, so I can put some more pictures up.
Have you ever thought about wearing your “Fatback’s BBQ” hat during interviews? Maybe you could get some free meals in return for the publicity.
(Laughing) No, man, I don’t even know where that place is. I’d be pubbing something that I don’t even know about.
