DeKALB – Two DeKalb men were being held in the DeKalb County Jail in lieu of $75,000 each, charged with robbing a group of teenagers Friday.

Kent Brown, 19, of Dolton, and Gregory Carter, 21, of DeKalb, were each charged with four counts of aggravated robbery and theft from person, according to a written statement from the DeKalb Police Department.

Brown was additionally charged with attempting to obstruct justice because he gave police a false name until after he was fingerprinted, according to court documents.

Investigators found the two men with cell phones belonging to the victims around 4:30 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of South Fifth Street.

The group of four teens had gone to the DeKalb Police Station to report the robbery around 1:30 p.m. Friday, DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler said.

They told detectives that they had been approached by two men in the 500 block of South Fifth Street. One of the men asked to borrow a cell phone, Spangler said.

The men were later identified as Carter and Brown. The two implied to the victims that they had a gun and demanded that the remaining three teens also hand over their cell phones.

They threatened to shoot the victims if they didn't comply; a gun was never shown to the victims.

The robbers fled the area on foot with the victims' property, the teens told police.

Each aggravated robbery charge is a Class 1 felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and each theft charge is a Class 3 felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Attempting to obstruct justice is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by less than one year in jail.

Carter and Brown are next scheduled to be in court Nov. 4 and Nov. 5, respectively.
