Skin speaks volumes about its owner's health and what's going on inside the body. To maintain and preserve skin's health, people need to monitor more than just what is put on it.

"Everything we consume and all that we absorb becomes part of our skin," Gloria Weglarz, business partner of Symmetry in Cortland, said in a recent news release. "If you're looking to improve the health and appearance of your skin, then you should start by examining your daily routine."

In honor of Healthy Skin Month in November, Weglarz encourages members of the Cortland-area community to be proactive with their approach to skin care and follow these tips on a regular basis:

• Make it a habit  – Dirt and debris accumulate on the skin, so morning and night be sure to wash the face and apply a moisturizer suited to the skin type. Women should remove all makeup before going to bed.

• Hydrate from within – Drinking water plumps skin's appearance from within. Be sure to sip on purified water throughout the day and avoid caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and soda, which can actually rob the body of moisture.

• Take vitamins – One of the best ways to get radient skin is by eating a well-balanced diet that features a spectrum of vitamins and nutrients, in particular, vitamin A, which is found in sweet potatoes, carrots and spinach in the form of betacarotene, or via a quality supplement

• De-stress – Both physical and mental stress can wreak havoc on skin, causing conditions such as oily glands or pallor. Combat stress with daily exercise and deep-breathing exercises.

"There are many components to a healthy skin care routine and each is equally important," said Weglarz. "I think people will find that when they take a multi-pronged approach to preserving their skin's wellness that the results will be both noticeable and long-lasting.

Symmetry offers an array of products to help improve health and wellness, including Genesis, a resveratrol-infused juice.

"With proper diet, supplementation and stress-reduction techniques, people can see great improvements in their skin," Weglarz said. "They may be surprised at what a few changes can make."
