SYCAMORE – Monday was the last day that candidates could file papers with the county clerk to run for local office in the 2010 primary election.

Dozens of offices will be on the ballot on the federal, state and local level.

In DeKalb County, the county offices that expire in 2010 include clerk, treasurer, sheriff, state's attorney, regional superintendent, precinct committeemen and 12 county board positions.

A total of 32 candidates are running for 17 different local offices. County Clerk Sharon Holmes said that this number is up over past elections, particularly because of several contested races.

"I believe filings are up because we have multiple filings in three countywide offices," she said.

These include a race to get the Republican nomination for county sheriff, the Democratic nomination for state's attorney and the Republican nomination for county clerk. Also, the District 1 county board Republican race is contested, along with several precinct committeemen races, Holmes said.

The primary election is Feb. 2, 2010.
