DeKALB – The Daily Chronicle will have a new editor when Jason Schaumburg takes the reins Nov. 9.
Schaumburg, a 1997 Northern Illinois University graduate, comes to the Daily Chronicle from the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake. He was most recently managing editor at the Northwest Herald, where he also has held positions of sports editor and assistant managing editor for news at the Northwest Herald. The Daily Chronicle and the Northwest Herald are owned by Shaw Newspapers.
In his time at NIU, Schaumburg, 34, also worked for three years at the Northern Star, NIU’s student-run newspaper. His positions at the Star included sports editor and managing editor. No stranger to DeKalb County, Schaumburg looks forward to returning to the area.
“I have fond memories of my time in DeKalb as a student and in post-graduation days, since I have family in the area,” Schaumburg said. “DeKalb County offers the rare treat of rural living with suburban amenities or vice versa. And the university provides a number of cultural and entertainment opportunities.”
Don Bricker, publisher of the Daily Chronicle, is confident Schaumburg is a good fit for the people of DeKalb County and the newspaper’s staff.
“I believe Jason understands the role of a community newspaper and is committed to providing local content that helps residents of DeKalb County know what is going on around them, and will help readers take advantage of what the DeKalb County community has to offer,” Bricker said.
“As Jason transitions to DeKalb County, I think he’ll find a local media company and news staff committed to the community and improving our products even in the face of a daunting economic environment.”
Schaumburg’s approach to community news goes beyond simply dropping off the newspaper in boxes and driveways every morning.
“Community journalism will live forever, but it’s not a one-way street,” Schaumburg said. “While informing readers is a top priority, engaging with readers and being part of the community also are important parts of community journalism.
“I want the Daily Chronicle and Daily-Chronicle.com to be an indispensable part of living in DeKalb County,” he said. “It will be our responsibility to inform and serve as the community watchdog, holding accountable those that need to be held accountable.”
While the Daily Chronicle has endured the same economic hardship as all area businesses in the last year, Bricker remains optimistic about the future.
“The Daily Chronicle, like other media companies, is navigating a challenging economy,” Bricker said. “However, in spite of the challenges, we’ve improved our products in the last year, and our news-gathering operation is getting stronger.
“The Daily Chronicle and its affiliated products provide the most substantial outlets for news and information in DeKalb County. I’m confident Jason will build upon recent improvements and strengthen the Daily Chronicle’s news-gathering efforts and connections to the community.”
