BELVIDERE – Tyson Kinsley said he ran one of the best races of his career Saturday at the Class 2A Belvidere Sectional.

He needed to have one of his best performances to beat Belvidere North’s Paul Zeman, one of the favorites to win the Class 2A state title.

Kinsley had a strong finish to take first place at 16:08, with Zeman finishing second at 16:12. Crystal Lake Central’s Ryan Alvarez, another one of Class 2A’s top runners, took third place with a time of 16:13.

“I was expecting to do well, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to win or not,” Kinsley said. “Towards the end I was feeling pretty good.”

It’s Kinsley’s second straight victory after taking first at the Freeport Regional last week. Zeman didn’t run at the Freeport Regional because he was sick.

"Zeman, along with a couple of others, has been touted as the (state) favorite,” Sycamore coach Mike Lambdin said. “For Tyson to go out there and beat him today, I think that’s going to give him some confidence going into next week.”

Kinsley’s victory helped the Spartans to a third overall finish, while Kaneland took fourth. Both teams earned a trip to Saturday’s Class 2A state meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Ryan Fraedrich finished 30th for the Spartans at 16:56, while Brett Harto took 40th (17:12), Riley Powers came in 42nd (17:13), and Aaron Klein finished 43rd (17:14).

Sycamore finished with 142 points while Kaneland had 144. Belvidere North won the meet with a score of 36, and only ten points separated Sycamore and Crystal Lake Central, who finished sixth.

“I saw the end of that race and truthfully, couldn’t tell if we had (qualified) or not,” Lambdin said. “My feeling was that we were going to just miss out.”

Trevor Holm led Kaneland, coming in 13th place at 16:40. Matt Reusche finished 23rd (16:48), Dominic Furco took 25th (16:52), and Edgar Valle came in 36th (17:06).

“Dominic being only four seconds off of Matt was a big thing for us,” Kaneland coach Chad Clarey said. “We’ve got room to grow, we’ve got room to improve for next week. The best thing we can say is that we’re going.”

Sycamore and Kaneland didn’t fare as well in the girls race. Kaneland missed qualifying for state by 17 points, taking sixth place with a score of 227. Sycamore finished eighth with 239 points.

“The girls ran as good a race as they probably could have,” Lambdin said. “I think they did everything they could. I’m happy for them and I hope they’re happy with the results.”

Tessa Strack finished 27th for Sycamore (20:39), with Nicole O’Connor finishing 46th (21:06), and Kendra Johnson taking 60th (21:20).

Andie Strang led Kaneland, coming in 28th (20:41). Ashley Castellanos took 29th (20:46), with Abby Dodis finishing 47th (21:07).
