Kurt Thurmaier, professor and Northern Illinois University Division of Public Administration director who organized and accompanied students on NIU’s first study abroad trip to Tanzania last summer, will make a presentation about the trip at next week’s Bread for the World meeting.

Thurmaier’s wife, Jeanine, and intern Tracey Swanson, who went on the trip, also will take part in the program. In addition to studying the customs, lifestyles and problems of the people of Tanzania, the NIU delegation learned about the role non-governmental organizations play in helping developing countries. They also helped begin the construction of a girls’ dormitory for a school in Nyegina.

The Thurmaiers and friends have formed a new organization, Tanzania Development Support to raise funds to support education and community development in Tanzania.

Thurmaier’s research interest include state and local public budgeting and finance, intergovernmental relations, comparative public management, and e-government, in which he has done extensive research, publication and teaching. He is a member of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at NIU, and previously served on the Latin American Studies and Russian and East European studies faculties at University of Kansas. His career includes four years in the Wisconsin State Budget Office as a budget and management analyst, a Fulbright Scholarship at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, consultant work with Polish local governments through the International City/County Management Association, and consultant work on US city/county consolidation efforts He has published numerous article and several books, and has a book forthcoming.
