DeKalb resident Gary Mullis entered songs he wrote into the Songwriters Contest Division of the Talent Expo 2009, which was sponsored by Northwest Alabama Music Publishing Co. and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

The event is held annually in Tuscumbia, Ala., to raise funds for The Alabama Music Hall of Fame, a nonprofit music organization. Mullis’ song, “Recitation about Roy Acuff,” won first place in the recitation category. His other song, “Keep It Country,” won Song of the Year 2009, and he also won the sponsorship category for collecting the most sponsorships and raising the most money for the Alabama Hall of Fame, according to a news release.

He was awarded a prize package that included a gold record album; a collectible mandolin signed by the Kentucky Headhunters; an Alabama Music Hall of Fame songwriters briefcase; a recording session to make a CD of his songs and a free trip to attend the Grand Ole Opry’s 84th Birthday Celebration in Nashville.

“Roy Acuff” was recorded by Grand Ole Opry performer Ray Wix and “Keep It Country” was recorded by international recording artist Dave O’Connor, according to the release, which said  the songs have been released to radio stations around the world on the “Kim’s World of Talent” compilation CD project.

Mullis traveled on Oct. 9 to Lexington, Ala., to record his own version of some of his songs, and these recordings also will be released to radio stations. He then traveled to Nashville with Darrell and Kemberley Glover, who are producing Mullis’ CD, to participate in the 84th Grand Ole Opry Birthday Celebration.
