NIU Veterans Club Veterans Day Public Roundtable: 6 p.m. Thursday in the Heritage Room on the second floor at Holmes Student Center, at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, this is a free event that is open to the public. Topics of the discussion will be the positive and challenging elements of the military experience, what makes veterans tick and how this affects the public.

Movable Memorial Wall open house: 2-7 p.m. Friday in the Regency Room of the Holmes Student Center at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, with a Veterans Memorial Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Veteran’s Assistance Office and the  DeKalb County Marine Corps League, the Department of Illinois Military Order of the Purple Heart is bringing the display to DeKalb and fallen soldiers from Illinois will be honored along with a presentation of the Remembrance Table. The MOPH Movable Memorial Wall is composed of images of Illinois’ fallen soldiers from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Living history camp: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Aurora Sportsmen’s Club rifle/pistol ranges on Rueff Road in Waterman, one-half mile east of Leland Road. The private sportsmen’s club offers thanks to all armed forces veterans and an opportunity for the public to learn more about the nation’s military history with an honor-guard presentation, historical reenactors and many military equipment displays, according to a recent news release. A Civil War ‘living history camp’ of men from Company B, U.S. Sharpshooters will inhabit the Aurora Sportsmen’s Club ranges, demonstrating their skills, including the use of cannon. Another group, lead by Chicago resident Brad Preston, will show Revolutionary War muskets in use, and several World War II military vehicles from Roberts Armory in Rochelle will be on exhibit. Vietnam-era equipment owned by club members, including an M60 semi-automatic machine gun and a mortar, also will be shown. Veterans are invited to fire rounds from AR-15s, M1 Garands and use the club ranges at no charge. The club trap fields and sporting clays course also will be open to the public for the day. Lunch will be served at no charge to veterans; a donation is requested for non-veterans. Veterans Day Observance: 7:30-10 a.m. Nov. 10 at Sycamore High School, by students and staff.
