Blackwood Brothers gospel quartet to appear at SUMC

The Blackwood Brothers gospel quartet will appear at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at Sycamore United Methodist Church.
The concert is part of the ongoing concert series partially funded by a bequest from long-time choir member Jessie Viner.
The Blackwood Brothers Quartet has been singing for more than 70 years. The group was originally comprised of James, Doyle, Roy and R.W. Blackwood. Many greats in gospel music have come through the Blackwood organization, including J.D. Sumner and Bill Shaw. For nearly seven decades, James Blackwood formed the enduring nucleus of the group. His death in 2002 ended an era in gospel music.
Today, the Blackwood Brothers carry on the tradition. James’ son, Jimmy, joined the group in 1970 – his lead voice anchoring the Blackwood sound. At the ends of the group are Wayne Little and Randy Byrd, acclaimed as the best tenor/bass combination in the business, according to a news release. All of this is rounded out by longtime Blackwood pianist and showman Brad White.
Over the years, the Blackwood Brothers have won eight Grammy awards, and have been inducted in to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. They regularly appear with the Gaither Vocal Band.
SUMC is located at 160 Johnson Ave., and a free-will offering will be taken.
The youth of the church are offering a spaghetti dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. the night of the concert to raise money for their mission trip. For information, call the church office at 815-895-9113.
