RSVP by Nov. 10 to attend seminar about fuel-saving windbreaks
By DAILY CHRONICLE

Residents of rural homes that are constantly exposed to the wind could save money by installing a windbreak.
In the winter, a dense multi-row windbreak can save 10 to 40 percent in heating the home, according to a recent news release. Energy to cool homes in the summer also can be reduced by a windbreak.
Windbreaks also can have other benefits: Wildlife habitat, especially with the addition of shrubs can be created. Fruit trees or trees for fuel-wood production also can be incorporated into a windbreak, providing food and fuel for heat.
Dave Shiley, University of Illinois Extension Natural Resources Management Educator will present a program regarding windbreak design, planting, and maintenance. Renovating old windbreaks also will be discussed. This statewide teleconference, which includes a presentation filled with windbreak images, will be offered from 6:30-8 p.m. Nov. 12 at the University of Illinois Extension office at 1350 W Prairie Drive in Sycamore, with a $5 fee.
Registration by Nov. 10 is needed to be sure space and materials will be ready. Register by phone at 815-758-8194, or e-mail your name, postal address, and phone number to johnhorn@illinois.edu.
